 A Chinese pop song: Ode to Yunnan

彩云之南,我心的方向;

孔雀飞去,回忆悠长;

玉龙雪山,闪耀着银光;

秀色丽江,人在路上;

彩云之南,归去的地方;

往事芬芳,随风飘扬;

蝴蝶泉边,歌声在流淌;

泸沽湖畔,心仍荡漾;

On April 22, 2016, a social service team comprised of seven student volunteers and four teachers from BC high school started an annual 11-day service trip to Yunnan. Despite a multitude of challenges and ordeals during the trip, it has long demonstrated to be an excellent platform for BC high school students to do volunteer services, learn diverse culture and folklore, improve self-independence and survival skills, and cultivate leadership talents.

As we set foot on the charming land, its agreeable natural beauty proved to be even more alluring—antique dwellings, luxuriant terrace fields, unsophisticated dwellers and diverse minorities. It was a blending of magnificent natural scenery and impressive cultural landscape. Just as “One can benefit as much from reading books as from travelling afar”indicates, our volunteers have experienced both an unforgettable journey of cultural exploration and an important transition to adulthood.

The service trip has turned out to be a good opportunity to learn from each other. Our student volunteers acquired new knowledge about local culture and folklore, learned survival skills from locals and taught local students English lessons; we learned from teammates, from locals and from those who served us. In Kunming, our volunteer team visited local kindergartens, primary schools and English training organizations to share knowledge and happiness with kids both in and after class.  Not only did our volunteers serve as support teachers, we also helped to tidy and decorate their classrooms. At the end of a day, all teammates felt fatigued, but nobody complained.

In Yunnan, our volunteer team has many impressive “for-the-first-time”experiences—making fire, cooking meals, building an open-air toilet, taking the traditional poorly-equipped “Green Train”, and exploring the underground cave… Such a wide variety of “for-the-first-time”experiences greatly astonished and bewildered our carefree high school teenagers who were born and raised in well-developed cities. But soon, we managed to adapt to different lifestyles and readily rose to challenges. As our survival skills and problem-solving skills subtly solidified, we volunteers developed a deeper understanding of love and care from parents as well as the importance of our social services.

Inspite of various challenges and ordeals, a good view of the inviting natural beauty along the service trip helped volunteers overcome fatigue. In Kunming, we visited the impressive Stone Forest to experience the far-off natural oxygen bar, to listen to birds’ singing and crickets’ chirping, to smell the fragrance of flowers, and to get a deep breath of fresh air. After that, our volunteers travelled to Dali by the traditional “Green Train”. In the multiethnic place, we communicated with local minorities and danced with hospitable dwellers; we visited left-behind children and lonely seniors. Additionally, it was in Dali where we explored the underground cave for the first time and lived in tents in the open air for three days, which greatly tested our courage and survival skills.

On May 2, our volunteer team returned to Suzhou after a long trip and thus brought Yunnan service trip to a successful close. All volunteers became emaciated and suntanned, but even more mature and courageous.
